Upgrade to KDE SC 4.7.4 packagesInstall KDE 4 Debian packages in your hard disk

There are 4.7.4 packages available in experimental, you can upgrade your KDE SC to 4.7.4 both from the 4.6.5 packages in Debian sid and from the KDE SC 4.7.2 packages formerly available at qt-kde.debian.net, you can do the upgrade thusly:

1. Add the experimental repository to your sources.list:

# Replace 'xx' or the whole url to use your local mirror.
deb http://ftp.xx.debian.org/debian/ experimental main
deb-src http://ftp.xx.debian.org/debian/ experimental main

2. Download this file and save it as /etc/apt/preferences.d/kde-experimental, beware if you already have an /etc/apt/preferences or you have other files in /etc/apt/preferences.d/, if that's your case you should read you apt preferences files and understand well what you are doing. In any case, you can do "man apt_preferences" to find more information about apt pinning.

3. Just upgrade your system with "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade" or "aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade".

For a basic KDE 4 desktop, install kde-plasma-desktop, kde-plasma-netbook or both packages (they are co-installable), which includes

kde-runtime Essential runtime components
kde-workspace Desktop environment
kde-baseapps Core applications
plasma-desktop or
plasma-netbook 		The KDE plasma workspace for desktops/laptops or netbooks.

For all of KDE 4, install the kde-full package, which also includes

kde-minimal The basic KDE 4 desktop, provided by kde-plasma-desktop or kde-plasma-netbook.
kdeplasma-addons Additional Plasma applets
kdegraphics Graphics applications, including the Okular document viewer
kdegames Assortment of fun games
kdemultimedia Multimedia players and utilities
kdenetwork networking-related applications, such as the Kopete IM client
kdepim Personal Information Management apps, such as Kontact or KMail
kdeutils General-purpose utilities
kdeedu Educational applications
kdeadmin System administration tools
kdeartwork Additional artwork and sound themes

For what a random user would expect in a desktop environment, install the kde-standard package.

kde-standard The KDE Plasma Desktop and standard set of applications.

Most users will also want to install kdm. There are still a couple of packages more:

kdetoys Desktop amusements
kdesdk Software development tools

Translations packages are kde-l10n-XX where XX is your language code
